Explain which assumption makes the method work
At A-Level, choosing a familiar method is only part of the reasoning. A student should also be able to name the condition that makes the method appropriate.
A practical example
In mechanics, ask whether a model assumes constant acceleration. In a chemistry calculation, identify the stated reaction and quantities. In biology, discuss how the sampling method affects the conclusion. Use an example from the student’s actual course rather than adding unfamiliar content simply to make the task harder.
Underline the assumption beside the working and test what would change if it did not hold. This helps distinguish understanding a model from recognising a formula. Confirm the subject, board and available tutor expertise before arranging support.
Make a worked solution explain the choice of approach
Choose a course-appropriate problem and pause before the first calculation or paragraph. Ask why the selected method is suitable and what information rules out an alternative approach.
After completing it, change one condition and discuss whether the method still applies. This reveals the reasoning around a solution, not only the steps inside it. Bring the student’s subject and exam-board details to an enquiry so the teaching can be matched to the actual course rather than an assumed generic A-Level syllabus.
