The Birmingham 11+ Format

What the grammar school test actually covers.

Birmingham grammar schools — including King Edward's — use GL Assessment format papers. The test splits into four timed sections. Our mock replicates this exactly so your child sits the real thing having already done it once.

📐

Maths

Arithmetic, problem-solving, number, shape and data — all under time pressure.

50 mins
📖

English

Reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and grammar questions on unseen passages.

50 mins
🔤

Verbal Reasoning

Word relationships, analogies, codes and sequences — tests language and logic together.

50 mins
🧩

Non-Verbal Reasoning

Pattern recognition, spatial awareness and visual sequences without relying on language.

45 mins
Why It Matters

What a mock test shows that practice papers don't.

Practice papers done at home have no clock pressure, no mixed sections back-to-back and no real stakes. A proper mock test reveals how your child performs when all of that is added at once.

1

Real time pressure

Many children know the content but drop marks when they have to keep pace. The mock shows whether pacing is actually a problem before it matters on the real day.

2

Stamina across all sections

Sitting four timed sections back-to-back is different from doing one practice paper. Concentration often fades in the third or fourth section — this is the only way to see it early.

3

A score you can act on

The section breakdown tells you exactly where to focus in the weeks before exam day — not a vague "keep practising" but a specific weak area and a plan.

FAQ

Common questions.

What does the Birmingham 11+ test include?

GL Assessment format: maths, English comprehension, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning — all timed. The mock replicates this exactly.

How does auto-marking work?

Multiple-choice sections are marked against the answer key on the day. You get a percentage score per section plus a comparison against the grammar school benchmark range.

What year group is the mock test for?

Year 4, 5 or 6. Year 5 is the ideal time — enough preparation ahead to act on the result. Year 6 children also benefit if the real exam is still a few months away.

What time are the weekend sessions?

Morning sessions, typically 9:30am or 11:00am, to replicate the time of day of the real exam. Exact time confirmed when we confirm your slot.
