What Year 3 English covers
Year 3 stretches reading and writing considerably. Children read longer texts and answer inference questions, organise writing into paragraphs, meet fronted adverbials and prepositions, learn the Year 3/4 spelling word list, and develop fully joined handwriting.
Where Year 3 students most often need help
Inference is the usual stumbling block — moving beyond 'what does it say' to 'what does it suggest'. In writing, children often have ideas but structure them poorly, and spelling from the statutory word list is frequently shaky.
The assessment that shapes Year 3
There is no national English test in Year 3, which makes it a good year to build comprehension and writing stamina before the demands rise. The Year 3/4 spelling list is examined indirectly through later SATs, so we start it now.
