What adapted tuition looks like in practice
For students with dyslexia, sessions use larger text, verbal explanations alongside written ones, and avoid long unbroken reading tasks. For students who struggle with attention and sustained focus, lessons are structured in shorter activity blocks with clear transitions — typically 12 to 15 minutes per task with a brief change of pace in between. For students with dyscalculia, the emphasis is on concrete representations of number before moving to abstract methods, and no assumptions are made about what should already be automatic.
How sessions are planned for students with additional needs

Subjects most commonly supported
English reading and writing support is the most frequent request, particularly for students with dyslexia who are struggling to keep up with comprehension tasks and extended writing at secondary level. Maths catch-up for students with dyscalculia is the second most common, often focused on number confidence, times tables, and written methods. Science at GCSE level also comes up frequently, where the vocabulary load and extended writing demands create barriers that targeted support can significantly reduce.
Working alongside school support
Many students receiving one-to-one tuition also have SENCO support at school or an EHCP. Kevin and Serena are happy to be aware of what is in a student's plan and to align tuition targets where appropriate — without overcomplicating the session or duplicating what the school is already doing well. The tuition should complement, not conflict with, any formal support already in place.
