How one-to-one differs from school support
School intervention and catch-up groups are limited by the need to move all students at roughly the same pace. In a one-to-one session, if a student understands something quickly, the lesson moves on immediately. If something is genuinely not understood, the lesson slows down and the concept is approached from a different angle — without any concern for what the rest of a class needs. This responsiveness is what makes the biggest difference in outcomes.
What the first few sessions look like
The first session is diagnostic. Kevin or Serena will work through a structured set of questions to identify specifically where gaps exist and where understanding is secure. This takes precedence over starting content immediately — a plan built on guesswork wastes time. From session two onwards, the lesson follows a structured format: a short retrieval warm-up, the main teaching topic, guided practice, and a brief home task to consolidate before the next session.
Why one-to-one builds confidence as well as grades
Many students who struggle academically have also developed a habit of avoiding questions they find hard — in class, they go quiet; at home, they skip the difficult homework. One-to-one removes the social pressure of being wrong in front of peers. Making mistakes in a private session, having them explained calmly, and then getting the next attempt right is one of the most effective ways to rebuild a student's belief that they can improve.
