What Year 4 tutoring should focus on
Good Year 4 tutoring should strengthen tables recall, comprehension, arithmetic accuracy and confidence with longer written answers. When those basics improve now, later KS2 feels much less rushed.
What Year 4 sessions at Teaching Success cover
- Multiplication Tables Check preparation — building all tables to reliable timed recall before the Year 4 assessment
- Four-digit place value and written arithmetic — column addition, subtraction, short multiplication and short division
- Reading comprehension — identifying main ideas, retrieving details and beginning to infer from text
- Writing in paragraphs — using fronted adverbials, inverted commas for speech and developing ideas across multiple sentences
The MTC: what it is and how Teaching Success prepares for it
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory government assessment taken in June of Year 4. It tests all times tables from 1 to 12 in a 25-question online assessment with 6 seconds per question. Unlike in-class tests, the MTC requires speed as well as accuracy. Teaching Success sessions build times table fluency table-by-table, starting with the ones most commonly tested (6, 7, 8 and 9), and include timed practice runs that replicate the real check environment so children feel prepared rather than surprised.
What parents should look for in the first four weeks
- Week 1: Serena assesses which times tables need the most work and agrees a practice plan with you.
- Week 2: Your child begins daily 5-minute table practice at home with the specific tables from the session.
- Week 3: Speed on the target tables is visibly improving — test them on a times table app to check.
- Week 4: First full progress update from Serena, including which tables are secure and which still need daily practice.
