What a Year 4 tutor should be doing
Year 4 has one defining event — the Multiplication Tables Check in June — alongside more technical English (speech punctuation, apostrophes) and formal short multiplication. A tutor keeps table fluency and written accuracy moving together.
Where Year 4 students most often need help
The frequent needs are timed table recall for the MTC, punctuating direct speech, and short multiplication that depends on secure tables. We usually support maths and English at this stage, and the free trial lesson is where we work out which subject and which specific gaps to prioritise.
The assessment that shapes Year 4
The June Multiplication Tables Check tests all tables to 12×12 against the clock. Because it is timed, we practise for speed and accuracy in short, low-pressure bursts rather than long sessions.
How lessons work
Teaching Success matches each student to a qualified teacher for their stage and priority subject. Weekly one-hour sessions combine focused teaching, worked examples, independent practice and a short review of earlier material so progress holds. Lessons run in person in Smethwick and Birmingham, or online across the UK, from £15 an hour, and always start with a free trial so families can check the fit before committing.
Looking ahead
At the Lower Key Stage 2 stage, strong tables and technical writing in Year 4 make the demands of Year 5 genuinely manageable. We keep every plan tied to the next real milestone so lessons always have a clear purpose.
