What a Year 2 tutor should be doing
Year 2 is the final year of Key Stage 1 and a big year for confidence. Across the curriculum, children are securing fluent reading, early writing with proper punctuation, number bonds and the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. A tutor at this stage keeps learning playful while making sure the foundations are genuinely secure.
Where Year 2 students most often need help
The most common needs are a child who reads without fully understanding, hesitates with number bonds, or has ideas but cannot yet punctuate a sentence. Small gaps here are quick to fix and prevent bigger struggles later. We usually support maths and English at this stage, and the free trial lesson is where we work out which subject and which specific gaps to prioritise.
The assessment that shapes Year 2
Year 2 SATs are now optional, but many schools still use SATs-style reading, SPaG and maths tasks internally. We prepare children for that format calmly so the tasks feel familiar rather than daunting.
How lessons work
Teaching Success matches each student to a qualified teacher for their stage and priority subject. Weekly one-hour sessions combine focused teaching, worked examples, independent practice and a short review of earlier material so progress holds. Lessons run in person in Smethwick and Birmingham, or online across the UK, from £15 an hour, and always start with a free trial so families can check the fit before committing.
Looking ahead
At the Key Stage 1 stage, a strong Year 2 makes the jump to formal written methods and paragraph writing in Year 3 far smoother. We keep every plan tied to the next real milestone so lessons always have a clear purpose.
