What Year 11 revision should prioritise
Strong Year 11 revision should focus on the papers that matter most, repair the gaps that cost the most marks and keep students calm enough to perform under pressure. That is usually far more effective than unfocused last-minute cramming.
Interleaved revision vs blocked revision: why it matters
Most students revise by blocking topics — spending a week on algebra, then a week on simultaneous equations, then a week on geometry. This feels productive but produces weak transfer to exam conditions. Interleaved revision — mixing different topics in each session — produces slower initial learning but much more stable performance in actual exams. Teaching Success Year 11 sessions use interleaved practice from February onwards, combining topic revision with mixed past-paper questions in every session.
The last 12 weeks: a realistic schedule
- Weeks 1 to 4 (February): targeted topic repair on mock paper weaknesses, one subject per session
- Weeks 5 to 6 (March half-term): consolidation block — full timed papers on the highest-priority subjects
- Weeks 7 to 9 (April — Easter): intensive reteaching of the 3 to 4 topics still costing most marks
- Weeks 10 to 12 (May): timed papers only — exam conditions every session, mark scheme review after each one
